For two parts with similar dimensions, the copying workload may be very different. When comparing quotes, put acquisition, modeling, accuracy, delivery, verification and field conditions on the same list rather than just comparing a total price.

Factors 1 and 2: shape and site conditions
Regular planes and complex freeform surfaces need different processing. Deep cavities, thin walls and reflective or flexible surfaces affect preparation. Large parts can require transport, positioning and multiple captures, so dimensions alone are not a sufficient comparison.
Disassembly, working space, on-site attendance and sample completeness affect scheduling. Multiple-view photos and basic dimensions help define an initial scope. State anything that cannot be confirmed from photos in the quotation.
Factor 3: Accuracy requirements and inspection location
As accurate as possible is not an actionable acceptance requirement. Cosmetic reference surfaces, mounting holes, mating shafts and assembly datums have different priorities. Define their targets and uses so effort goes where it affects downstream work.
Equipment specifications do not equal the final result at every point on every part. Capture conditions, reconstruction, datums and verification methods all matter. Agree inspectable critical items rather than an accuracy number without conditions.
Factor 4: Which step to deliver to?
Delivering a scan mesh differs from delivering surfaces, solids, drawings or a modified design. State intended tooling, machining or mechanical editing when requesting a quote, rather than discovering at delivery that reconstruction must be added.
Separate capture, cleanup, reconstruction, modification and drawing work, with formats and versions. Even a package price should name its deliverables so different suppliers can be compared fairly.
Factors five and six: verification and modification scope
Critical-dimension reports, deviation comparisons, reinstallation and prototype validation affect effort. Requested lead times, revision rounds and later design changes should also be distinguished from the original task.
Correcting a model within the approved scope differs from adding geometry because the customer changed the product's use. Clarifying this is not an obstacle to communication; it creates consistent expectations during delivery.
Before making an inquiry, prepare a brief information
Start with photos, dimensional range, quantity, critical locations, purpose, file formats and target timing. Incomplete information need not prevent discussion, but retain uncertainties until they can be checked against the sample.
