The short answer
Reverse engineering is not priced by product size alone. First specify whether you need scan data, editable CAD or revised engineering drawings, then assess surface complexity, occlusion, critical dimensions and acceptance. Photos can support an initial scope review; firm prices and lead times require a sample or data assessment.

The same enclosure needs different work for a visual presentation, assembly modification or pre-tooling review. A scan mesh emphasizes capture and cleanup. Changing walls, holes and mounts also requires geometry reconstruction and assembly checks. Stating the end use is more useful than simply asking how much it costs to copy a part.
Separate scanning, modeling, drawing revisions and inspection when comparing suppliers. An STL-only quote is not directly comparable with one including STEP, dimensioned drawings and revision rounds. A lower total may mean a narrower scope rather than the same work at a lower price.
What increases the workload?
Large does not always mean difficult, and small does not always mean simple. Deep holes, cavities, thin edges and reflective or transparent surfaces affect capture. Freeform surfaces, textures, wear and distortion affect reconstruction. Some internal features cannot be recovered from an external scan; agree disassembly or alternative measurement methods.
Attach accuracy requirements to specific features. Is the priority hole spacing, mating faces or the whole outline? Are assembly datums available, and how will critical dimensions be checked? These details determine inspection and rework effort. A scanner specification is not a guarantee of accuracy for the entire project.
Information that helps the assessment
If shipping a sample is inconvenient, send multiple views with a ruler or approximate overall dimensions. Agree confidentiality before sending sensitive geometry and share only necessary data; unrelated personal identity documents are not needed.
- Photos of the whole part, back, inside and critical mounting locations.
- Overall dimensions, material, quantity, missing areas and wear.
- Data purpose: display, resizing, assembly, prototyping, machining or tooling review.
- Critical dimensions, mating parts, acceptance method and original drawings if available.
- Required formats, feature history, modifications and 2D drawings.
- Target delivery date and options for disassembly, shipping or an on-site discussion.
What the quote should state
Record deliverables, measurement coverage, datums, revision rounds and exclusions. For incomplete samples, agree whether missing areas remain missing, are rebuilt by symmetry or are newly designed. Inferred geometry must not be presented as measured data.
XCR is based in Fuyong, Baoan, Shenzhen and can connect reverse engineering with mechanical design, prototyping and manufacturing. On-site work, sample shipping and scheduling are discussed after reviewing the information. This article makes no unapproved starting-price or fixed-lead-time promise.
Compare the scope
| Deliverable scope | Typical purpose | Confirm before quoting |
|---|---|---|
| Scan mesh | Record the physical surface | Coverage, occlusion and mesh cleanup |
| CAD reconstruction | Create geometry for further design | Surface quality, hole datums and export format |
| Mechanical modifications | Adjust dimensions, mounting or internal layout | Changed areas, mating parts and revision rounds |
| Drawings and checks | Define critical dimensions and acceptance criteria | Annotation scope, inspection method and report format |
Frequently asked questions
Can a Shenzhen reverse engineering job be quoted from photos alone?
Photos support an initial assessment. Cavities, precision fits or worn samples may require the sample, key dimensions or existing data before scope and price can be confirmed.
Does a reverse engineering quote include tooling?
Not by default. Scanning, reconstruction, mechanical design, prototyping, tooling and molding are separate tasks and should be itemized.
